Tokyo Midtown Award 2013

The Tokyo Midtown Award which marks its sixth year this year, is a design and art competition sponsored by Tokyo Midtown – an area that is filled with design and art works. The competition aims to discover and support designers and artists of the future, and welcomes a broad range of applicants from students to the general public. The judges consist of artists, curators and designers working at the forefront of their various fields.



This year, the five judges of art competition, Toshio SHIMIZU, Kimio TSUCHIYA, Yayoi KOJIMA, Daisuke NAKAYAMA and Kazuhiko HACHIYA have selected six artists from around 300 applicants. Now six finalists are making their art works. These works will be exhibited from October 18th to November 10th 2013 at Tokyo Midtown, at B1 floor.

Artworks for OTEMACHI FINANCIAL CITY

TOSHIO SHIMIZU ART OFFICE has recently produced artworks for
OTEMACHI FINANCIAL CITY which celebrated its grand opening on
1st of November 2012.
  
On the East-side of the buildings, a sculpture named
“Spiritual wall with certain surface” by Katsuhito Nishikawa welcomes
people visiting the business area. The sculpture has clean and universal impression
which come from a subtle contrast between its materials, white marble and withe concrete.
  
On the West-side of the buildings, there is a series of sculptures
“Keys of Affinity” by Kate Thomson, inviting people to touch and sit on the sculptures.
The human scale and endearing character of the sculptures create a relaxing atmosphere.

Shiro Kuramata is an acknowledged Japanese designer who is well known for his original colours and shapes.

  

Although he passed away 20 years ago, the influence of Kuramata’s work on product design today remains strong.

   

This exhibition is showing the doors specially designed for TOSTEM CORPORATION by Kuramata in 1990s. The original designed doors are reproduced only for this exhibition.

Anish Kapoor ,the world-acclaimed British artist, who created the “GOLDEN GATE”, 

and Sou Fujimoto, one of the leading architects in Japan who created “BEAUTIFUL PALACE”,

collaborated under the TOSTEM Booth’s theme “GOLDEN GATE, BEAUTIFUL PALACE”

which is widely known to Chinese people as a symbol of permanent happiness and prosperity.

Moreover, Chen won , one of the most famous composer, composed the special music for the booth.

It is our pleasure to announce the opening of “超空間 INBETWEEN” at the Shanghai Gallery of Art at Three on the Bund. This group exhibition of three artists: architect Kengo Kuma; designer Shiro Kuramata; and artist Anish Kapoor, is curated by Toshio Shimizu.

Under the exhibition theme, “materiality/non-materiality and transparency/non-transparency”, the three artists created their own unique spaces. Three different approaches taken by the three artists interine with one another to create a strong and dense“inbetween”space in the gallery.In commemoration of this exhibition, a symposium will be held. Kengo Kuma, Wu Jiang, Toshio Shimizu will talk on the theme”The Prospect of Future Urban Development and Architecture”.

Yaguchi Minami Children’s Park, Ota-ku, Tokyo refurbishment project has been accomplished and now it’s open for public.

Tamagawa Art Line Project, an artist, a designer, Ota city, a factory in Ota-ku have all cooperated on this park refurbishment project, completed on 25th March and unveiled for public on 1st of April.
